If you believe that hospital births are too risky

Hospital-level care with the comfort of her home in Portland. To keep you safe and help you recover, you should stay home while you are a Hospital at Home patient. Just as if you were staying in the hospital, your activity level will depend on your diagnosis and condition. When you are discharged from Hospital at Home, you may go back to your regular activities. You can reach your care team any time, day or night.

And so I know what’s negotiable and what to ask for. Abbott Hospital2Home are a team of dedicated coordinators and nurses supporting enterally fed patients in the community. One clip from the post shows Braxton laughing while hanging out with her friends seemingly prior to the health scare. In another selfie, Braxton can be seen wearing her mask while sitting in a hospital bed. "Yall, I have the FLU 🤦🏽‍♀️ and let me tell u it's worse than COVID in my opinion," she explained. Braxton, 45, continued, "I was taken to @northsidehosp and was met by the BEST nurses and doctors including @therealdrjackie to find out what's wrong."

Both home births and hospitals make me nervous, and I feel like centers are a great compromise, but would love to hear opinions from an actual nurse. I don’t get the whole “hospitals are bad, sterile, cold, scary” mindset. For me, it is the PEOPLE who make the atmosphere during labor. I was fortunate to deliver both of my babies in a very nice hospital where the rooms are kept warm and the lights low, they play nice music for you if you want, that kind of thing. But I would deliver in a cinder block room if I could have the same doctor and especially the nurses.

Discuss your birth plan with your health care provider. Go over your expectations and make a list of the equipment and supplies you'll need to meet those expectations and ensure a safe experience for you and your baby. Share the plan with others who will be supporting you during labor and delivery. This will help everyone understand what you want, so you can feel safe, supported and confident in your birth experience. I think anyone in the medical field has a slightly biased negative view of home births, and I don’t mean that in a nasty or accusatory way. I just think when the only side of it you see is the times when things go wrong it can leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Successfully implementing Hospital at Home

It may often seem like there's a round-the-clock revolving door of residents, nurses and other hospital staff members hovering around your bedside. You can expect to get less rest at a hospital for the same reason ("time to check your blood pressure again!"). It offers the most advanced technology.On-staff pediatricians and, in many hospitals, sophisticated newborn medical technology are available should your baby need immediate medical care. If you REALLY want a home birth that doesn’t involve an IV or monitoring or people coming in and out of your room.Deliver at home. We leave ourselves open to limitless litigation if we don’t follow them. I WANT you to be happy and have a wonderful delivery, but there are rules I HAVE to follow.

Patients in the program experienced fewer clinical interventions, more physical activity and comparable patient satisfaction scores as those being cared for in the hospital. The program has also helped lower costs and readmissions. Discuss with your health care provider the symptoms that might mean you'll have to go to a hospital. I decided to have my fifth naturally in a different, small hospital and it was an amazing experience. Unfortunately, that hospital had closed when I was expecting my sixth.

The program is available 24/7, and it can send out paramedics anytime to rapidly see a patient. The paramedic will then video with the physician who is online. The patient receives training from a nurse on how to use the technology, which begins when the patient is hospitalized. Starting a hospital-at-home program is challenging because it must be up and running around the clock from the very start.

lessons learned from launching a hospital-at-home program

When you’re recovering from illness, the hospital may be the last place you want to be. Take advantage of industry resources that can support the effort. “We've been working with a group called the Hospital-at-Home Users Group [hahusersgroup.org], which is a terrific resource,” Dalton said. “I believe you could build your program just in working with the resources that they've made publicly available.” DeCherrie is one of the group’s four leaders. Make sure you allow ample time to prepare your EMR for the program.

I still think the background of the midwives in the study would be important. Are they nurse midwives or are they direct entry (apprentice, non-medical midwives)? I guess I’m just hoping to really see a fair, apples-to-apples comparison one day. For example, I would love to know if in the U.S., CNM attended home births have better/worse/equal outcomes as CNM hospital attended births. I think the benefit is knowing that these were all planned, attended births, rather than unplanned and no prenatal care type births.

We actually aren’t attached to the hospital where I work. However, the reality is that 21 out of 10k really isn’t a big number. Keeping in mind these deliveries were all done by a midwife, either in the hospital or at home.

Hospital at Home patients meet with their doctor every day through two-way video. Your baby's position in the womb can make a difference in your labor and birth experience. Figuring out fetal position for yourself is also fun and can help you bond with your baby. Set a reasonable expectation for the time needed to ramp up the program.
